Reviews

Miller's Horse received positive reviews in The Desert Advocate, Veterinary Product News, and The Seattle-Post Intelligencer.

Excerpt from The Desert Advocate (August 30, 2006):

"It's a thin volume at 117 pages, but the wealth of knowledge contained within obviously derives from someone who is devoted to her subject.  But the encyclopedic quality of the book's content is made friendly by Miller's folksy, real-world approach to all the minutia of mane and mule that makes the book so enjoyable -- and, in the end, useful, because Miller's 'intriguing' approach is also practical.

Miller organizes her book according to the nature of the horse, saddling up one topic at a time, breaking up the book into chapters that range from the physical ('The Healthy Horse,' 'The Physical Horse,') to the figurative ('The Written Horse,' 'The Aesthetic Horse,') to the glamorous ('The Celebrity Horse,' 'The Well-Dressed Horse.')

... In 'The Aesthetic Horse,' she creates a verbal museum with examples from da Vinci to Remington, and in 'The Mythological Horse,' provides a symbolic panoply from the winged Pegasus to the fearless Greyfel from the Nordic legend of Siegfried.  Appropriately placed, the 'Afterward:  The Dead Horse,' is not for the squeamish, but it does finish off the book with an informative register of horse byproducts that you may not be aware of.

Miller's compendium is a rich tapestry of all things equine, and in keeping with her devotion to the referential, and her scope -- from the everyday to the grandiose -- both the opening theme of the loquacious television horse, 'Mr. Ed' and the impassioned plea of Shakespeare's 'Richard III' come to mind.

So, while it's certainly true that 'a horse is a horse, of course, of course,' it's not the case that you have to pay as much as a 'kingdom for a horse,' at least not 'Miller's Horse,' which sells for a much more reasonable price at the local or online bookstore."

What the Writer's Digest Competition judges said:

“This book is an eclectic collection of intriguing (and dare I say, fun?) information and trivia about horses.  Any horse lover, and many casual observers, would be fascinated by the author’s material.  Beyond that, however, it is obvious that the author has extensive and deep knowledge of her subject matter.  This evident experience and her natural storyteller tone, combine to create a sense of confidence in the reader that the author is credible.  This goes a long way toward developing the reader engagement that is so important for a book of this nature.  Another important, yet often underappreciated, element of reader engagement is the book’s interior layout.  In this case, the author’s design is clean and easy to follow, allowing the reader to focus on her material without distraction.”
